Tanzania has become a center of tourist and nature interest since the 1970s, when explorers, scientists and nature enthusiasts decided to go out and discover the country’s natural wonders. There are many major attractions in the region: from the Rift Valley, a tectonic valley that originated from shifts in the earth’s crust, to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Gombe Nature Parks, and Lakes Victoria and Natron.

Thousands of tourists reach these lands each year to experience an unforgettable safari. Choosing the right time to leave, however, is crucial not only for the comfort of the trip, but also for maximizing wildlife sighting opportunities.

When to go to Tanzania is one of the most important questions to ask yourself before planning your trip, because the answer depends on many factors: weather conditions, animal migratory behaviors, your travel experience, and your budget.

Before planning your safari, you need to ask yourself some basic questions. What is the best time to go to Tanzania based on your priorities? What are the temperatures, climate and rainfall patterns in this beautiful African area? What are the seasons we may encounter and what aspects characterize them?

In this guide, we will try to answer these questions, which are very frequent for first-time travelers, providing you with a complete framework for choosing the best time to leave and experience a safari in Tanzania when going proves optimal for your travel goals.

Climate, temperatures and seasons in Tanzania

Tanzania has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 20° to 32° C. There are no major differences in temperatures throughout the year: whether you travel in the summer or winter season (which I remind you are reversed from the northern hemisphere), you will find roughly the same average temperature. Rather, significant variations occur in relation to altitude and distance from the sea.

The climate is also characterized by high humidity and the presence of two dry seasons and two wet seasons, regulated by the Monsoon and Trade Winds from the Indian Ocean.

The four seasons of Tanzania

The long dry season (December-March)

During the winter months, December through March, the season is dry and quite warm, with very little rainfall making the weather stable and ideal for long hikes without finding yourself in the middle of a sudden downpour. This is one of the best times to observe the Great Migration in the Serengeti and is an excellent time when to go to Tanzania if you want pleasant temperatures and clear skies.

The long rainy season (late March-mid June)

From late March to mid-June begins the first rainy season, which is extremely wet and marked by even violent thunderstorms with strong winds, especially in the afternoon. Despite the more challenging weather conditions, this period has the advantage of greener landscapes and more competitive prices. Many safari operators reduce their rates during this season, making it attractive for those who want to save money while still having an authentic experience.

The short dry season (June-October)

In the summer months and early fall, from June to October, the season is again dry and hot with little rainfall. This is considered the best time for a safari in Tanzania by many experts, as it combines ideal weather conditions with excellent wildlife viewing. The cooler temperatures and reduced humidity make safaris more comfortable, and animals are more concentrated around water sources, making them easier to spot.

The short rainy season (late October-early December)

In late fall, the season is again wet and rainy, characterized by brief but heavy thunderstorms. Even at this time, prices tend to be lower than in the high season.

Temperatures in different areas

As for temperatures, these increase toward the area of the Zanzibar archipelago and its islands, such as Pemba and Mafia, where averages of 20-26°C are reached with higher humidity, while they decrease near the mountainous areas, such as on Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro, where it can be as low as 0° or below due to the altitude. Inland, the climate is generally drier, with temperatures between 21 and 23°C.

When to go to Tanzania: Complete seasonal guide

Let’s look in detail at some seasonal cues on when to go to Tanzania (for safari or travel in general)

The best time to travel to Tanzania

The best time to travel in Tanzania is from July to September, which are the coolest and driest months of the year. The period from December to February should also be considered, especially for itineraries that include seaside resorts and for those wishing to observe the Great Migration in the Serengeti.

Generally, as a tour operator we recommend that you go on a trip to Tanzania in the summer months, between July and September, when you can take advantage of all the daylight hours of the day without being in the middle of a monsoon during trips, safaris or treks, such as the one that will take you to climb Kilimanjaro.

Considering that this is peak season, one must take into account higher costs for all services, flights and hotels, as well as lower availability due to the large number of reservations. Prices can increase by up to 40-50% compared to the off-season, and the number of vehicles in popular parks tends to be concentrated along animal migration routes.

Traveling in the rainy months: when does it pay off?

However, there are two eventualities in which you can consider planning shifted during the rainy months, even considering the factor of “when to go to Tanzania to save money.”

The first case can be kept in mind if you wish to keep expenses and costs down by taking advantage of low season periods. During the rainy months, prices of tourist services, flights and hotels drop significantly, allowing you to enjoy a safari experience at a fraction of the cost of the high season. In addition, spaces in national parks are less crowded, offering a more intimate and authentic experience.

The second case, however, concerns the Great Migration, the annual phenomenon in which huge herds of animals move in search of food, water and mating partners. Of course, where there is prey there are also likely to be predators: if you wish to photograph zebras and elephants, hippos and lions you may be more willing to endure the humidity and rain in the hunt for the perfect shot.

This spectacular event attracts thousands of photographers and nature enthusiasts each year who are willing to brave the harsh weather to capture one of nature’s great spectacles. You can observe the great migration in summer, from July to September, or in winter, from December to March, when the herds move between the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Ecosystem.

The best time for a safari in Tanzania: Guide by attraction

We try to divide the country’s main attractions according to the ideal climate for visiting them, to give you an accurate picture of when to go to Tanzania depending on your travel priorities.

When to visit Arusha and Tarangire

The northern national parks, such as Arusha or Tarangire, are perfect in December, January, February and July/August: the higher temperatures and scarcity of rainfall force animals to congregate around permanent lakes and streams for watering, and so it will suffice to stand nearby, at a safe distance and following the guides’ instructions, to observe and photograph them. During these months, wildlife concentrations are among the highest of the year, offering exceptional opportunities for sightings.

When to visit Serengeti and Ngorongoro

Serengeti Park is at its most splendid in winter, between December and February, during the Great Migration of herbivores, which also attracts lots of predators. This is the ideal time if your goal is to photograph the most spectacular migration phenomenon on the planet.

The same consideration applies to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, because during the wet seasons animals come together to mate, creating fascinating natural dynamics to observe. In this case, it is necessary to travel prepared with appropriate clothing for the sudden changes in temperature and heavy rains that can bother the convoy of observation vehicles.

When to visit Lake Natron and Victoria

If you are interested in lakes, such as Lake Natron or Lake Victoria, we suggest visiting them between June and September. Flamingo watching tours are popular during this season, as flamingos congregate on the large lakes, creating stunningly beautiful natural scenery. The lakes also offer unique opportunities for landscape photography and birdwatching, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world.

Practical tip: Never forget that in the desert areas, even if the temperature has risen above thirty degrees during the day, it is very likely to be cold at night, with sharp temperature changes to below zero. If you decide to book a night in one of the hotel-camps in the savannah, don’t forget to bring a change of heavier, warmer clothes with you, even during the summer months.

When to go trekking in Tanzania

For a trek to Mount Kilimanjaro we suggest the winter months, between December and February, when weather conditions are more stable and skies tend to remain clear, favoring panoramic views from the summit. In spring/summer, due to the location on the equator, temperatures are slightly lower but rainfall more frequent.

Keep in mind, however, that because of the altitude, the temperature on Kilimanjaro is alpine-type, with temperature depressions down to below zero, regardless of the time of year you choose. Acclimatization is critical for a successful climb, regardless of the season.
